<a href="#comment-513" rel="nofollow">@Hanks </a>
Hanks, sorry I missed your replay last year! Let me clarify a couple things. In the summertime, that extra thermal mass from the dividing U walls would be holding cool temperature from the night. To more than compensate, cooling tubes have been added to the back of the home. These tubes run 40' through the back berm and capitalize on the earth's temperature of 56 degrees F. The hotter the greenhouse gets, the more air can escape out of its rooftop vents, which pulls outside air in through the cooling tubes. The air cools as it travels the 40' and enters the house like A/C.

In the winter, the tubes are closed and the greenhouse can get even hotter than in the summer because of the low sun pushing more sunlight into the house. Vents between the greenhouse and the home create convection currents that move that heat inside.

Also mention worthy is that losing a couple dividing tire walls inside doesn't make a huge difference. There is still tons of thermal mass in the floors and interior can walls.

I've got the same issues with the global model. I want to build an earthship in Mongolia. Obviously we're removing a LOT of thermal mass from the sidewalls, although can/bottle walls are going to go up a lot faster (except for that concrete room divider at the rear) than a few hundred more rammed earth tires. What's good about the global model is the roof (simple, accepts metal roof for clean water, interfaces with 3rd greenhouse, although you have to put in a foundation for the front). It also probably matches the third Phoenix greenhouse. In Mongolia we don't need to show anybody plans and I'll be supervising it all. I'll make my own plans with enough details for myself. I'm contemplating replacing the internal can/bottle sidewalls with tire walls, even though tire walls could take hundreds of man hours longer. I'll keep the straight backwall to attach the vigas, but bring tires up straight up to the ceiling. I also want a solar toilet or compost toilet, generic planters, a kitchen on the front face, not the expensive botanical cells. People in the US need that stuff to stay with code.

At some point or another we're gonna come visit. I need to learn a few key things in the building process before I start my own anyways.
